Wendell Berry is a poet,
novelist, environmental activist, farmer, and teacher. He has worked tirelessly
for the environment, and continues to do so at the age of 80. He is a prolific author, having written dozens of novels, short stories, essays, and volumes of poetry. Running through much of
his work, is the underlying theme of taking responsibility for the land.
Berry was born on August 5, 1934 in Henry County, Kentucky. He was raised in an agricultural community, where he grew up working on his father's farm. After attending the University of Kentucky, Berry became a creative writing fellow in the Wallace Stegner writing program at Stanford. He began his career teaching writing and literature. He spent time in Tuscany as a Guggenheim fellow and later accepted a position at New York University. After spending two years in New York, he returned to Kentucky where he continued to teach, write, and farm the land he so loved.
